Faculty of Pharmacy at Mahasarakham University Mobilizes to Produce 10,000 Cartridges of Foot Ointment for Northern Region Flood Relief

On August 28, 2024, at the Pharmaceutical Technology Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahasarakham University, Associate Professor Dr. Prayook Srivilai, serving as the Acting Governor on behalf of the President of Mahasarakham University, visited the site to provide encouragement to volunteers from the Faculty of Pharmacy. During the visit, Associate Professor Dr. Prayook Srivilai actively participated in the preparation of medicinal ointments, including the filling and labeling of cartridges. The effort, spearheaded by Assistant Professor Dr. Chanuttha Ploylearmsang, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, alongside university administrators, faculty, staff, and student volunteers, aimed to expedite the packaging and distribution of 10,000 cartridges of foot ointment. These ointments are intended to assist individuals affected by severe flooding caused by continuous heavy rainfall and flash floods in five northern provinces of Thailand: Chiang Rai, Nan, Phrae, Phayao, and Sukhothai.

Associate Professor Dr. Prayook Srivilai emphasized the critical need for this initiative, noting that the recent floods in northern Thailand have resulted in substantial damage to property and severe health challenges, particularly dermatological conditions. Prolonged exposure to floodwaters increases the risk of infections. In response, Mahasarakham University, through its Faculty of Pharmacy, has initiated the production of over 10,000 cartridges of antifungal and anti-itch ointments to alleviate the symptoms and reduce the incidence of fungal infections among flood victims.

Lecturer Greepol Manwiwattanakun, from the Pharmaceutical Sciences Group, provided insights into the formulation and production process of the ointment, which possesses antifungal and anti-itch properties essential for treating skin conditions commonly arising from prolonged immersion in contaminated water. The production target is set at 10,000 cartridges, with an initial batch of 1,500 cartridges and subsequent batches produced in phases until the target is met. An initial shipment of 3,000 cartridges is planned for distribution to severely affected areas, such as Phrae and Nan provinces, starting with Phrae Province, home to several faculty members. Additionally, a reserve of ointment is being prepared should Mahasarakham Province experience flooding in the future.

Ms. Natchanan Ekwongsa, a sixth-year pharmacy student, reflected on her experience as a volunteer, highlighting the practical application of her pharmaceutical education to real-world challenges. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to community service, aligning with the Faculty’s mission, “Pharmacy MSU, the heart of serving the community.” She also extended words of support to those affected by the flooding, expressing hope for a gradual improvement in the situation.
